Week 11 – Sleep Thief

Sleep Thief

The Sleep Thief
is an early riser

His work is long done
before you even dream
of retiring

His passage leaves no sign
You won’t suspect the slightest
until you lie, eyes closed
and open the indigo casket

Inside you keep
those beautiful, dark
waves of slumber
your blanket of peace

But this time
In place of silence

A thousand droning, whining fears
rise to niggle and nag and gnaw
spinning and buzzing
worrying and troubling

The stolen sleep replaced
with a heap of countless doubts
worse than emptiness

This the Sleep Thief’s gift
His diversion. A rearguard

Guaranteeing his getaway
with your good night’s sleep.
