Week 21 – Ode to hospital waiting rooms

A recent injury led to me spending an inordinate amount of time in hospital waiting rooms. Here is my impression and my first attempt at writing a poem in (more or less) villanelle form.

Ode to hospital waiting rooms

An agonising kind of hell
an airless, thronging, choking freeze
the waiting room in hospital

Faded screens cast numbing spells
old magazines do naught to ease
this agonising kind of hell

Boorish seconds coarsely crawl
the coffee coats your throat like cheese
the waiting room in hospital

Your hands lie limp while anguish swells
no act can alter or appease
this agonising kind of hell

No pastime pricks the worry’s thrall
a nagging sting without reprieve
The waiting room in hospital

Your care and caution all for null
The gods consign whome’r they please
This agonising kind of hell
the waiting room in hospital
