Week 23 – Whittling

A whittler carves an image from wood by paring away tiny slivers. What if you could re-make your own life the same way?

A whittler works with wood, and coolly
wields his sharply patient tool. He
has a vision.

He perceives the dainty bird
that with each shaven curl emerges
through attrition.

At last the polished whole produced
his starting block now so reduced
Essential precision.

I’ve seen this process in reverse
Congested space creates perverse,
wooden existence.

What’s needed then is a whittler’s eye
to scrutinise, identify
surplus resistance.

For truly streamlined flight, a cast of
ballast is required. So craft your
own deliverance.
